Draft #2: Product Summary and Analysis

The article "Integrating Lighting in the Internet of Things" shares insights about the advancement of lighting with IOT. With seamless connectivity, it provides opportunities in the lighting domain such that the lights can be controlled remotely. The Internet of Things serves as a support for connected lighting system which allows communication and data sharing between devices. The enhanced lighting system can also improve energy efficiency, therefore, reducing carbon footprint. Mobile App is integrated in the IOT system to enable users to have personal control of the light settings at their own individual workplaces and meeting rooms. The mobile app has features such as dimming and switching and lets users to set schedules for any light settings. The user can simply control the brightness of the lights or switch it on or off on the app.  With that, people can control the lights at their own convenience which improves the comfort and satisfaction of people in the building.

Lights are smart and easier to manage as compared to current lights when integrated with IOT technology. With IOT, it is easier to manage the power consumption of each light fixture. It has become a trend on the market due to the low cost sensors, microprocessors, and wireless communications to provide new types of services for consumers and businesses. One of the major lighting companies, Philips is a key player in developing IOT lighting system which has unique features that can stand out from its competitors.

Philips introduces SpaceWise wireless technology, a system that allows employees to create customized light zones in their own office spaces. With Philips Field App, employees can alter sensor configuration patterns and select the desired light level of individual lights according to their needs. This is beneficial for example in a conference room where lights closer to the projection wall are to be dimmed or switched off while other lights are to be at higher light levels. The app also has the ability to configure an individual light or a group of lights. The technology provides convenience for employees to personalize light settings for better comfort and improve productivity.

The SpaceWise technology provides a benefit of reducing energy usage, therefore, achieving high savings. Due to the wireless approach, the need to provide a controls design and intent with lighting circuits is not necessary. Sensors communicate virtually through the system. This helps to improve energy savings as there is full light output at occupied workstations and lower background light level at unoccupied workstations. The technology provides an easy set up giving employees the flexibility to change the lights levels according to their preferences. Hence, the technology led to a 75% reduction in energy costs compared to the traditional fluorescent lights.

There is ease in installing in the lighting system which gives a competitive edge over its competitors. The plug and play set up makes installation easier. As a stand-alone system, there’s no need for any network or computer. The Philips Field App includes features that allows users for easy set up  and connect wireless switches. SpaceWise ensures that the right settings is in line with changing needs in flexible office space.

SpaceWise is an innovative lighting system which makes it convenient for employees to adjust the light levels to suit their personal preferences. With this, employees will have better light quality suited to the task which leads to better productivity. By switching to this lighting system, energy is saved and costs is reduced.
