Final Draft - Product Summary and Analysis

The article "Integrating Lighting in the Internet of Things" (2018, Oct 29) shares insights about the advancement of lighting with the Internet Of Things(IOT). The article discusses the functions and features of SpaceWise wireless technology and describes how its enhanced lighting system can improve energy efficiency, therefore, reducing carbon footprint. Spacewise users are able to have personal control of the light settings at their own individual workplaces and meeting rooms with the use of an app, which is integrated in the IOT system. The mobile app has features such as dimming and switching and lets users to set schedules for any light settings. Users can simply control the brightness of the lights or switch them on or off on the app. The Spacewise app can be downloaded from the Google Play store. According to the Philips Lighting Blog website (2016), people can use the app to control the lights at their own convenience, which improves the users’ comfort and satisfaction in the building.

Philips (n.d.) introduces SpaceWise wireless technology because the website states that when lights are integrated with IOT technology, they are smart and easier to manage as compared to current lights. With IOT, it is easier to manage the power consumption of each light fixture. The technology is popular on the market due to the low cost sensors, microprocessors, and wireless communications to provide new types of services for individuals, consumers and businesses.

One of the features of SpaceWise wireless technology is the Philips Field App. The app allows users to alter sensor configuration patterns and select the desired light level of individual lights according to their needs. This is beneficial, for example, in a conference room where lights closer to the projection wall are to be dimmed or switched off while other lights are to be at higher light levels. The technology provides convenience for users to personalize light settings for better comfort and improve productivity.

Another feature of SpaceWise technology would be the dwell time feature. With this feature, users can create customized lighting zones in their own office space. This helps to improve energy savings as it provides full light output at occupied workstations and lower background light level at unoccupied workstations. Due to the wireless approach, the need to provide a controls design and intent with lighting circuits is not necessary. Sensors communicate virtually through the system and switch off the lighting zone after the last person leaves. Davidson (2016) states that using intelligent LED lighting systems reduced energy costs by 75% and increased productivity by 20%. Therefore, they are more efficient than traditional lights.

There is ease in installing in the lighting system which gives a competitive edge over its competitors. The plug and play set up makes installation easier. As a stand-alone system, there’s no need for any network or computer. The Philips Field App includes features for easy set up and connect wireless switches. SpaceWise ensures that the right settings is in line with changing needs in flexible office space.

SpaceWise is an innovative lighting system which makes it convenient for users to adjust the light levels in each office workspace and meeting rooms to suit their personal preferences. By switching to this lighting system, users can have better visual comfort which leads to better productivity. It helps to save on energy, therefore, reducing costs by paying for lighting when and where it is needed which is the purpose of the system.

Reflection for TLM1010 Technical Communication

The module has equipped me with the necessary skills to write an effective technical design report and to deliver an oral presentation. It was a heart-warming experience to learn report writing at the university level and there are valuable skills that I have learned such as citing sources and paraphrasing. The ability to summarize the author’s ideas allows me to explore different ways to express myself in my own words, therefore, increase my understanding of the topic. In the module, I have learned to cite a source using the APA in-text citation style to give credit to the original author. In my product description summary and analysis assignment, I managed to summarize and paraphrase a difficult article by using the strategies that was taught in class. By applying these skills and with effective research, it will be a stepping stone for me to produce an outstanding research paper in the future.

The module provides an opportunity to express one’s ideas by presenting, which is another way of communicating. I stammered and stumbled through the presentation while presenting with my team members. Hopefully, this experience allows me to grow and refine my presentation skills. By reflecting on the feedbacks given by the professor and course mates, I would learn from my mistakes and to deliver a good presentation in the future. Peer evaluation is a way to get me to listen and learn from the presentation of others. I believe that with consistent practice, I am able to engage with the audience well and to present my ideas effectively.

In conclusion, this module has taught me key lessons and I felt that my language skills have improved both in writing and speaking. Without the guidance of the professor and course mates, I would not have improved in terms of language.

Self-Introduction Letter

Title: Self-Introduction Letter

Dear Professor Blackstone,

My name is Khamirul and I am writing this letter to introduce myself to you. I graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic(NYP) with a Diploma in Electronic, Computer  and Communication Engineering. I have experience in C#, C++ and LabVIEW gained mostly through my course of study.

I am currently undergoing Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Telematics and I believe that this course provides opportunities to broaden my horizon in the field of engineering. I have keen fascination about the latest technologies and inventions. During my final year project, I developed an LED lighting controller. This course also covers on the Internet of Things which is beneficial for me to develop more advanced technologies.

I am able to talk concisely and fluidly. I believe that effective communication is a skill that has to be cultivated.  As a Vice-President of French Club, I held and oversaw club meetings and discussions. I have to convey my message in as few words and clearly as possible. However, I have a quiet personality that led me to have awkward conversations when approaching people. When I have gathered enough confidence, I am able to talk with them comfortably.

I would say that my presentation skills has improved slightly over the years in polytechnic. It took me a while to learn how to form sentences. I think with good communication skills, the receiver is able to comprehend fully the message being delivered. Therefore, my goals for the module is to be more comfortable with expressing myself and deliver presentations with good sentence structure. I hope to achieve my goals with your guidance and mentoring.

Best regards,

Khamirul
